Portland Pride 2008, was it enough?
I’ve attended the Portland Gay Pride Festival for many years now, and every year its been the same thing. Including the people who attend. But this year was a complete shocker. Around 1:00pm on June 15th, 2008; the lines that lead you inside the fenced off festival grew times ten, and ten, and ten. The lines were the longest I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. Why was it all of a sudden that hundreds of Portlanders cattled to the Waterfront that day? There were even so many breeders there, that I didn’t know what to think. But they were there to support and celebrate with us; a celebration that we fought for years ago. 39 years ago to be exact. The kids and drag queens of Stonewall Inn fought against the Police, in an attempt to take their own freedom. No one knew at the time that that act of soltitute and bravery would lease years of fearless gay men, lesbians, transgender men and women, bisexual men and women, drag queens, leather daddies and many, many, many queer allies.
Here we are in the year, 2008. Gay Marriage is on the rise, lgbt domestic partnerships are legal, and more and more younger gay men and women are reffering themselves as “Queer”. What will the year come and how does that reflect on how we celebrate every year with corporate sponsors and community organizations? How?
